Studying strategy can hide a problem

A player who reads strategy feels like a student, not a gambler. Sometimes that is exactly true. Sometimes the study is a costume that losing wears, and the honest test is the same for both: what do the numbers say, and what happens when you try to stop?

The student’s trap

Improving at poker is real, and so is using improvement as a licence: another buy-in justified as tuition, a losing year reframed as a learning curve, hours that grow because study “counts as work”. Track your results honestly, in money and in hours. If the numbers have been negative for a long time and the volume keeps rising anyway, that pattern deserves a name, and it is not dedication.

The basics, always

Your bankroll is entertainment money, fully separate from living money. Set deposit limits at every room you play. Decide session stop times before you sit. Never play with borrowed money, and never make poker your plan for paying a bill. Strategy improves decisions; it does not remove variance, and no drawing on this site changes that.
